Officials in Guatemala City report the death toll at 15,043 with 37,000 injured after three major earthquake series in five days. At least 220,000 residents lost homes as aftershocks hit the capital during a night of renewed tremors, rain and cold.
Patricia Hearst testified she faced numerous death threats from the Symbionese Liberation Army, was moved between hideouts in a garbage can, and locked in a closet for over a month. In Lincoln Nebraska a bill requiring deputy sheriffs to undergo training narrowly avoided defeat as a kill motion failed by one vote and an amendment gained support. Senator Otho Kime had attached the measure to LB432 which had been set for final reading and faced opposition.
