Dairymen push higher milk supports to aid consumers

Dairy farmers told the Senate Agriculture Committee that higher government supports are needed to prevent production declines and looming shortages. Patrick B. Healy of the National Milk Producers Federation urged tying support levels to 85 percent of parity with quarterly adjustments, noting current parity has fallen as costs rise. Healy warned that if consumer pressure blocks a price hike, production will drop further and prices will surge, while echoing calls to counter European cheese subsidies with countervailing duties. He cited cross-state backing from Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Georgia, Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Missouri and Washington.
