Zacchini Circus Fire Cannon Accident Injures Stars

Linda and Emmanuel Zacchini injured during Ringling Brothers act in Jacksonville Florida. Linda, 21, in fair condition after neck and leg fractures from cannon mishap. Emmanuel, 69, suffered a minor back fracture. Both in hospital after premiere show incident blamed on cannon heating and inadequate storage.

Lynda Martenson Visits with Parents in Fremont

Miss Lynda Martenson of Fremont spent several days with her parents Mr and Mrs Wedward Martenson. Mr and Mrs Albert Schmidt hosted a family supper near Platte Center for Michelle Schmidt's birthday. Mrs Mary Mareek and Mary Lynn attended a Columbus reception for Mr and Mrs Pal Scharff Jr. Others from Council Bluffs and nearby regions joined family gatherings.

Salak Promoted to USAF Sergeant in Arizona Unit

Jon Salak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Salak of Schuyler, is promoted to sergeant in the U S Air Force. He serves as an administrative specialist with the 923rd Tactical Fighter Training unit, supporting air operations for ground forces. A 1967 Schuyler High School graduate, he attended Mesa Community College in Arizona. His wife Joan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dvorak of Schuyler.

Deadline set for Elks scholarships February 14

Clyde Simpson, scholarship chairman of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, announced that February 14 is the closing date for Elks National Foundation college scholarship applications. The foundation offers 538 scholarships totaling 397,600 dollars, with 200 awards from 700 to 2,500 dollars, plus 38 grants of 600 dollars each.

Nebraska Bag Company closes after pollution controls delay

The Nebraska Bag Company in Ralston says it has halted operations until pollution control devices are installed. The plant, a corn meal processing facility, has been closed since January 27 and was given until February 7 to complete the anti pollution systems. It will not reopen until the equipment is in operation.

Washington UPI report says Charles J. DiBona faces strong Senate Armed Services Committee opposition over his leadership view on an all volunteer Army. Nixon may drop the nomination as Hershey’s successor ages toward Feb 46 with committee doubts and questions on seasoning. Margaret Chase Smith and John C. Stennis reportedly opposed, while DiBona met with them recently.

Trusty Sheriff Keys Lead to Jail Escape Near Van Buren

In Paw Paw Michigan a 17 year old jail trusty Clarence Olsen asked Under Sheriff Mycon Southworth for the car keys to shovel snow outside the office. Southworth gave him the keys and Olsen was later arrested heading out on Interstate 4. A SLIC hearing was set for February 27, 1970 in Platte County Nebraska regarding a proposed case involving Carl H Hoge County Clerk.

Smallpox Confirmed in Meschede Nun Hospital Case Rises

The confirmed smallpox count in Meschede rose to 13 after physicians linked two nun cases at Meschede Hospital to the outbreak. The Ruhr Valley city reported the escalation as health authorities traced infections and implemented containment measures.
