Dollar Rises on Fed and European Bank Intervention

UPI reports a sharp uptick in the U.S. dollar on European exchanges after intervention by the Federal Reserve and European banks. Gold opened unchanged in Zurich at 176.75 dollars and fell to 175.75 in London, with bullion priced at 175 an ounce at morning fixing. Bankers in Paris Brussels and Amsterdam noted the intervention boosted the dollar amid a six week slump as West Germany’s central bank and the Swiss National Bank purchased dollars.

Unoccupied car rams parked cars and homes in San Francisco

Neighbors heard a crash that damaged fourteen cars and two apartment buildings after an unoccupied vehicle sped down a steep hill. Police suspect intentional release, with no injuries reported in the two block incident. Damage to cars estimated at 7000 dollars.

Nebraska superintendents average wage report misstates total

The Nebraska Council of School Administrators says the average salary for superintendents in the state's largest districts is 0,960 dollars. The survey excludes Omaha where Owen Knutzen earns 49,000 and Lincoln where John Prasch earns 38,000 plus a retirement annuity.

Protest overpaid workers in Avon County strike

More than 4,000 Avon County Council employees took a day off to protest excessive pay after a faulty computer produced oversized paychecks. A janitor earned 5.7H weekly and a worker 648 for a week. About 300 picketed City Hall as NUPE officials urged action.
