Retired Platte Center man carves wood and rocks at home

Walter Arndt, a former farmer, now pursues wood carving and lapidary in his garage. He makes bowls goblets and pots from local red cedar and other woods, and polishes and mounts stones collected on the farm and on travels. He studies rocks and gem settings, then gives cracked gifts to family and friends.

Little People Find Perfect Little Son For Adoption

Adam, a year-old kept in foster care, was chosen from five Little People of America candidates by Robert and Mary Spector of Lebanon New Jersey. The Spectors contacted the Nebraska Children’s Home Society, learned Adam was alert but nonverbal and receiving speech therapy, and after approval flew to Omaha to bring him home. His smile and trust marked his first moments with his new family.

Economic indicators show faint start for new year

Washington AP reports economic indicators gave weak signals for the new year with a 0.2 percent November drop in leading indicators, insufficient to form a trend. Commerce chief economist Courtenay Slater says the small change cannot be read as meaningfully negative or positive, while half of indicators rose and half fell.

Farm Prices Rise Again in December

U S Department report shows farm prices received by farmers up one percent between November 16 and December 15 marking the third straight monthly rise. Higher hogs cattle and corn prices offset declines in lettuce olives and tomatoes. Farm expenses also edged up half a percent while remaining five percent above a year ago.

Carter pledges no U.S.-started war in toast to Poles

President Carter told a Warsaw audience that the United States would never start a war, except by mistake, while warning that the Soviet Union would only act when provoked.
