Seoul hotel blaze kills 157 as escapes fall short
A Korean engineer blamed lack of outside fire escapes and nonfunctional emergency lighting for the Taeyongak hotel fire that killed 157 people and left 64 injured. The 22 story luxury hotel in Seoul’s business district burned Christmas Day, with many victims leaping from upper floors. One American casualty was G W Goodwin of Sacramento. Investigators questioned the contractor and city officials over possible fire code violations as firetrucks could reach only the eighth floor.
