Area students receive UNL degrees in first-semester plan

About 900 baccalaureate, graduate and professional degrees were awarded at the University of Nebraska Lincoln as of the end of the first semester. A Thursday reception honored graduates, families and friends in the Nebraska Union with area students listed among degree recipients.

World Synod of Bishops Opens Sept 30 1977

Vatican sources say Pope Paul VI set September 30, 1977 as the starting date for the next World Synod of Bishops. The Synod's permanent secretariat notified Vatican departments of the date, which has not been officially announced.

Nebraska Weather Outlook With Cold Front Approaching

A warm front moved east in Nebraska lifting afternoon temps toward the 40s. A cold front from the North Dakota border will move south tonight, bringing teens overnight and 30s highs Saturday. Highs Thursday ranged 28 to 51, overnight lows 13 to 31, winds variable across the state.

Revenue Department Opens Columbus Office January 2

Nebraska Revenue Department will open a taxpayer assistance office in Columbus on January 2 with Gary Brazeal in charge. The office, in the old city hall, will be open Mondays and Fridays 8 am to 5 pm and on January 27 February 3 February 10 and April 7 for federal IRS help as well. Columbus Theatre marks half century of entertainment

The Columbus Theatre opened Christmas Day 1926 in a grand vaudeville era. It drew 2,400 for opening performances with 1,900 attending the next day as films and acts showcased classic cinema. Notables wired congratulations and the venue showcased ornate design, dressing rooms, and the World Realty chain heritage.
