Markets from Chicago report rising futures on the Chicago Board of Trade as trading begins the week. Prices shift amid early activity with traders watching key economic signals and stock indices for direction.
Nebraska taxpayers gain a new upgraded toll free telephone system at the Federal Office Building in Omaha. The system handles 200 incoming lines, lowers operating costs by about 10 percent, and provides data on calls and performance to improve service. Over 174,000 calls answered this year, with calls free from anywhere in Nebraska.
Seventeen accidents on Columlius city streets since Tuesday with no injuries. Names and locations include Phyllis Grotelusehen Monroe and Terrance Ludden at 1h Street and 23rd Avenue, plus incidents on 180 Street and 27th Avenue and 1701 23rd Street. Damages listed from $73 to $905. Public aid and hit and run notes at multiple sites.
The Metropolitan Law Enforcement Association honored Kent Roumpf of Nebraska City for outstanding service and 19 year old Chris M. Madsen of Omaha with civlian award. Roumpf aided in a February gun battle with parole violator W. D. Watsonis who was shot dead. Madsen chased a purse snatcher after hearing a scream last December. Numerous local traffic incidents and damages are listed with restitution amounts and locations.
In Omaha a federal warning advised disposing of Christmas cards printed with lottery tickets tied to a West Indies hospital sweepstakes. U S District Attorney William Scharporst urged residents to surrender such cards to postal inspectors, noting it is against federal law to use the mails for a lottery.

The State Patrol reported three more fatalities on Nebraska roads raising the yearly toll to 386, down from last year’s 430. Euniice Sherman, 43, of Macy died in a one car crash near Macy. Douglas Betka, 17, of Fairmont died in a crash north of Milligan. Edna Edstrom, 41, of Lincoln died in a two car crash near Lincoln with her husband Herbert Edstrom, 81, also injured.
MIAMI Fla AP police investigate links between a missing Bible page and the throat slaying of Arnold Zeleznik, 9, in a motel. Detectives will compare the Bible to another to hunt clues as Ver nal Walford, 31, alias Robert Grant, is charged with first degree murder after the boy’s body was found in a motel bathroom. The Zeleznik family was en route to Costa Rica when the incident occurred.
