Gas rate proposal collapses in energy talks
Washington (UP) A netral gas pricing compromise collapsed in the House Senate energy conference when its chief architect abandoned the plan calling it a turkey. Senate conferees voted 16 2 against the compromise killing it in conference. Johnston warned of dire consequences but urged a vote to settle the issue. The plan would extend federal price controls to gas prices within producing states but allow a steep upward curve that could amount to deregulation in a few years. Rep. Dingell called it an honorable compromise of a dangerous and deadly problem, not deregulation. Conference chairman Marley Staggers urged action as the Senate seeks to break its deadlock and move forward. The proposal had been a tightened balance between price controls and gradual deregulation after long closed door talks.
