Investigating committee defers to local authorities on student shooting
A state investigating committee says local authorities must determine possible personal criminal liability in the November 15 confrontation at Southern University where two Black students Denver A. Smith and Leonard D.P. Brown died. The panel notes the fatal shot likely came from an area where six men gathered near sheriff deputies, but stops short of naming a deputy or identifying the six men. Attorney General William J. Guste Jr. released the report, calling the assumption that a deputy fired the fatal buckshot “fair,” while noting the mystery may involve personal responsibility.
