RABAUL Papua New Guinea in 1997 the town faced a sudden eruption of Vulcan volcano. In five days the harbor town climbed from a 15-foot speck to a 230-foot inferno trapping ships and killing about 500 people as residents fled to safer ground. The region remains volatile under the Ring of Fire.
