Bernard Brenner reports from Washington that a pending bill to ban imports of foods produced with pesticides not approved in the United States could cut sugar and coffee supplies without benefiting consumers. Assistant Agriculture Secretary Lyng says the measure would hurt poorer nations and stall exports, arguing current policy allows differing country practices and that imported foods already meet domestic residue standards.
Government agricultural statisticians report Nebraska commercial red meat production totaled 2 682 million pounds in the first ten months, up from 2 580 million a year earlier. October output reached 295 million pounds, up 10 percent from last year.

LINCOLN UPI India begins a wheat testing program sponsored by an organization and supported by Nebraska wheat producers and four other states. Marx Koehnke, head of the State Agriculture Department's wheat division, says flour testing in India is new. The program, co-sponsored by Western Wheat Associates, aims to teach millers bakers government officials and the public in India about wheat characteristics needed for flour products. Previously India only noted red or white wheat. Boll weevil costs US cotton farmers 200 million in crop losses annually and 375 million in pest control.
A short course for large and commercial feeders handling about 1000 cattle yearly will be held at the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education on January 25 1974. The program covers rapid industry changes and implications for big feeders including processing methods marketing patterns financing waste management and air regulation and ration quality control. Two panels will discuss feeder source shifts and new feedlot design ideas with speakers from the university the Northwestern National Bank Omaha and USDA Denver.
The rural electric movement through ACRe spent about 110000 this year on political contributions and fund raising. ACRe reports 93514.30 raised by Oct 28 with total costs and contributions at 110186. Senate support went to 16 Democrats and two Republicans including Gale W McGee. Through NRECA linked leaders ACRe backs friendly legislators on loan funds and rural electrification issues.
