Six speedsters eye the $5,000 Inaugural Handicap at Platte County Agricultural Park Track on opening day. An $2,100 allowance for 2year-olds follows in race eight. two routes appear in races five and nine. First post is 4 p.m. as the Columbus Races run through Oct 1 under Platte County Agricultural Society supervision.

Four Arrested In Plan To Steal Elvis Body

Memphis police detained four men suspected of plotting to break into Elvis Presley’s Forest Hill Cemetery mausoleum and steal his body for ransom. Officers arrested three near the mausoleum around midnight. the fourth was captured at Baptist Hospital after injuring a knee while fleeing. The group reportedly carried burglary tools but did not damage the mausoleum door.

Slayings in Hackettstown Shocks Warren County Community

Fourteen year old David Galvin was among six victims gunned down in Hackettstown and nearby Mansfield Township. Emile Benoist, 20, killed himself after a two hour death spree. Authorities seek motive as a large manhunt followed the shootings. Benoist, a tattooed ex Marine with past arrests, was described as troubled by acquaintances.

Rhodesia peace plan briefing and second talks

U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young and British Foreign Secretary David Owen briefed South Africa's John Vorster on a last chance Anglo American plan for Rhodesia. Police seized anti-Young placards as a second session was called for 5:30 PM. Owen and Young pressed for an internationally acceptable negotiated settlement while warning that violence could persist without agreement. Smith was said to reject one plan condition, disbanding Rhodesia's army, amid white voter concerns.

Banker says Lance loan to Budget Director was ordinary

An area of high pressure over central Iowa brings mild weather to Nebraska with mostly partly cloudy skies. Motor vehicle homicide charged in pedestrian death

A coroner's jury indicted Charles Kraus 18 of Cedar Rapids for felonious motor vehicle homicide in the death of John Holtz 70 of 1468 33rd Avenue who died after an accident Friday near 14th Street and 31st Avenue. Kraus held without bond awaiting arraignment. Other weekend highway victims include Rodney Snide 20 Avoca Co Van Nguyen 46 Bellevue David J Majerus 26 Lincoln and Tod Rae Green 40 Omaha.

Liddy hid weapons in prison cell for protection

Watergate figure Gordon Liddy concealed a club and pipe in his Allenwood Federal Prison Camp cell during a summer transfer. Regional Commissioner Joseph A. Nardoza said officials reported no penalty and parole would not be delayed, noting the incident did not warrant change and Liddy had served long enough. He faced a 20 year term for Watergate and 18 months for contempt.

Beermann estimates petitions to force 1977 school aid election

Lincoln Nebraska UPI reports Secretary of State Allen Beermann says he expects enough signatures to place LB3, the 1977 school aid measure, on the 1978 general election ballot. If approved, state aid would rise by 20 million dollars annually for three years, with about 46 thousand valid names needed.
