Nickel carbonyl eyed as cause of Philadelphia Legion disease
Dr. F William Sunderman Jr a toxin expert at the University of Connecticut Medical Center found nickel carbonyl in tissue from Philadelphia health officials in a probe of a mystery illness linked to a state American Legion convention. The disease has killed 26 and sickened 150 others with new names added, but findings are not conclusive and urine tests are negative. Sunderman cautioned that highly toxic fumes may have entered the Bellevue Stratford Hotel where the convention was held and noted the study is discussed with CDC officials.
