United Way Drive Sets $83 500 Goal In Columbus
Columbus United Way Inc. launches its 1976 77 fund drive chaired by Hockenberger Jr aiming for 83 500 dollars an increase over last year. Omaha Hostage Siege Ends In Slaying At South Omaha Tavern
Oklahoma laborer Jimmy Green, 31, killed one hostage and wounded another during a 17 hour siege at Halfway Tavern in South Omaha. Police stormed the building freeing a third hostage and arresting Green, who was described as mentally disturbed. Akiens, 38, wife of the tavern owner, remained in critical condition with throat wounds. Nathan Culbertson, 59, was found dead with a slashed throat. The other hostage, Phyllis Umage, 35, escaped unharmed. Green’s brothers had been flown in from Stillwater, Oklahoma, to help persuade him to surrender. Police said the investigation would determine if a robbery was attempted.
