Independent businessmen back extending widows Social Security benefits
Independent business owners favor keeping full Social Security benefits for surviving spouses after a worker’s death. A National Federation of Independent Business poll shows 64 percent support Gallagher’s legislation, 40 percent oppose, with Nebraska showing 47 percent support and 45 percent dissent. The proposal would raise annual payouts and may require higher taxes, but most independents prefer preserving widows’ income.

Record corn yield in sight if crop can escape blight
Nebraska crop observers said on August 1 that corn could top last year’s production if weather holds. Wheat may reach 43 bushels per acre, with total wheat near 109.99 million bushels. Corn acreage around 4.583 million could yield 513.62 million bushels, about two bushels per acre below 1969 record. Blight risk cited but current signs seen as limited, contingent on warm humid days and showers. Sorghum, soybeans, and hay also expected to push state records amid acreage gains.
