Israel offers two stage troop pullback to reopen Suez Canal
United Press International reports Israel proposed a two stage withdrawal of troops from both banks of the Suez Canal as a condition for reopening the waterway. A minimal first stage would allow Egyptian engineers to dredge and restore civilian life west of the canal. a second stage would retreat further. The plan, outlined during Joseph Sisco’s Jerusalem visit, aims at an interim Middle East peace, but specifics and timelines remain unclear. Egyptian trials for an alleged Sadat overthrow are also noted.
