Hugh Downs to quit Today host role in NBC shift
Hollywood reports Hugh Downs will leave NBC News Today after five years and be replaced by Frank McGee in October as part of a new contract. Downs cited desire to pursue writing lecturing teaching and private consulting and will join the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions as a Visiting Fellow after his final day. He has been with NBC in various roles for over 50 years and rose to national prominence as Jack Paar's Tonight Show sidekick.
