UPI reports cost of living up 0.2 percent in March bringing three month annual rate to 2.9 percent. Food and gasoline ease offset by higher services costs and a sharp rise in used car prices. Real weekly earnings fall, CPI at 167.5, and 1967 dollars now 167.50.
The State Board of Equalization votes unanimously to hold Nebraska sales tax at 2.5 percent and income tax at 15 percent. The UPI report covers union strikes by United Rubber Workers against major tire and auto makers, Palestinian fighters in Beirut, and early swine flu vaccine trials by government volunteers.
The Platte County Board of Supervisors urged the county clerk to inform the state department of roads to continue a traffic study for a traffic control light at the busy Columbus intersection. The board seeks the best light type and possible federal aid, with joint funding by state and county if needed. In other action a liquor license for Donald Meays was approved for East 30 Inn.
Moscow Radio reported Teng Hsiao-ping could not have instigated the Peking unrest that toppled him because he has been under house arrest for nearly three months.
Rabbi Baruch Korff of Boston president of the United States Citizens' Congress will speak at Platte College Monday April 26 at 10 a.m. in Room 205. Public attendance is allowed and Platte’s Student Senate sponsors the event.
The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that the 1961 Industrial Development Act allowing counties and cities to buy land for private industry using public funds is unconstitutional. It upheld the portion permitting promotional spending, but found that funding land purchases violates the state constitution by lending government credit to private use.
A weak cold front moved across Nebraska but was not expected to affect conditions. By noon many areas reached into the 60s with Omaha at 61 and Chadron at 62 as Tuesday’s highs hovered in the upper 50s to over 60 statewide. Sunrise and sunset times are noted for Thursday.
Sponsors announce a Discover Columbus Days logo contest with a $100 savings bond prize for the winning design. Jim Uhlmann says the logo will appear on posters and banners and is open to entrants 16 and older with a May 29 deadline.
A committee to study possible sex discrimination in Columbus City Schools will hold a public hearing at 8 p.m. Friday April 23 in the high school cafeteria. The six member community and six employee panel formed under Title IX plans a self evaluation with focus on employment and extracurriculars.
