Washington columnist Dick West argues Rand McNally mileage guides list shortest routes, inflating travel allowances for lawmakers who bill 20 cents a mile plus 10 percent. He concedes the fault lies with engineers making roads longer, not cartographers.
The U S Command reports five helicopters shot down and U S troop strength falling to 423 000 the lowest in three years President Nixon expected to announce further troop withdrawals. Civilians suffered in terrorist incidents nationwide with 7 killed and 56 wounded in My Hiep village market and a bus crash near Saigon as U S warplanes flew 65 sorties around Dak Seang.
Elaine Grana towicz daughter of Mrs Mabel Granatowicz of Leigh has begun work in Omaha for the Douglas County Welfare Bureau. She has been employed in Lincoln since graduating from the University of Nebraska last spring. Mr and Mrs Stanley Granatowicz and their boys of Omaha visited his mother and uncle at 5 Woodward Street over the weekend.

Word has been received by Mrs. Paul Gorman of the death of Thomas McNelly aged 19 in an auto accident in Philomath Oregon. His mother is Donna Leach of Creston and his grandmother Mrs. R D Leach also resides in Philomath. Funeral services were held in Oregon on April 15. The McNelly address is Mr. and Mrs. William F Meelly 2125 Applegate Street Philomath Oregon.
Detroit United Press International reports General Motors President Edward N Cole predicts the internal combustion engine will remain the main auto power source for at least two more decades while testing catalytic converters to reduce hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. He foresees near zero pollution within four years and production feasibility by 1974 to 1975 with unleaded gasoline and alternative fuels considered, favoring the internal combustion engine over other options.
Atlantic City Coast Guard reports 50 to 60 mph winds knocked down the station flagpole, leaving gale warnings unposted. In the confusion the warning flags and notices could not be displayed as planned, leaving mariners without official guidance.
New York UPI reports Lauren Bacall, new to musicals, won best actress in a musical for Applause, while Borstal Boy took best play. Childs Play led with five Tonys. Applause total four. Awards covered March 17 1969 to March 31 1970. 16 categories decided by drama writers and roughly 500 theater insiders.
Suver Creek area residents hosted and entertained guests at multiple gatherings. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Oscar Imm and others from Exeter Lincoln Omaha and Chicago. Mrs Grace Merrill and Mrs Dale Van Dyke visited Osceola, while Mrs William Imhoff hosted 13 WS.C.8 members for a quilting afternoon at the church basement. Walter Youngdahl to host next Wednesday with Mrs Algot Youngdahl leading the program.
More than 1,200 Boone County farmers with feed grain bases totaling 156,009 acres are enrolled in the 1910 Feed Grain program, intending to divert 63,483 acres from production. The 1969 program enrolled over 65 thousand acres with 73,340 acres diverted.
The B fourth annual Nebraska Funeral Directors Association convention will run through Wednesday in Lincoln. Dr. Robert Lamp of the University of Wisconsin Medical School is the featured speaker for the affair.
Miss Tsabella Micek’s piano pupils stood out at the 1970 central district auditions of the Nebraska Music Teachers Association held at Hastings College. Grace Rathkamp Tamm Olk Wanetta Salal Kim Cromwell Berky Croker earned highly superior or superior ratings, qualifying for the state NMTA auditions in November. About ninety prepped piano students entered Saturday’s event.
