March of Dimes Walkathon at Pawnee Park
The Columbus High School DECA sponsors the annual March of Dimes Walkathon to raise funds. The 20 mile route starts at 9 a.m. with registration at 8 a.m. at Pawnee Park east shelter and goes east north past the powerhouse, west past the lakes, and south again. Participants are advised to train shoes, trim nails, use blister protection, wear thick socks, and bring foot powder. Snacks and drinks are provided along the route.

Two University of Nebraska Lincoln students joined Phi Beta Kappa at a ceremony before the annual banquet. Daniel W. Miller, a medical major and NU Medical Center freshman, and Susan L. Shively, Latin American studies and Spanish major, were among the initiates. Annette M. Kunzman, Albion native and sociology major, also earned honors. Maz Larsen of NY College of Arts and Sciences was made an honorary member, and William J. Bouwsma of UC Berkeley delivered remarks on humanistic values and goals.

Solar energy project heats classroom at St Francis High
St Francis High School science students under Tim Janssen built a solar collector from 15¢ beer cans mounted on particle board with a back air return. Painted black, the cans absorb sun heat producing 109 to 126 degrees Fahrenheit with airflow. A small fan circulates the heat for classroom use.

Paddling upheld by high court
The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that public school teachers may paddle unruly children without prior notice or a hearing, as constitutional protection does not bar corporal punishment of students. Platte County Supervisors to rule on road access today
The Platte County Board of Supervisors planned a decision on a proposed county road that would give isolated landowners access. Mohrmans and neighbors argued the road would block irrigation center pivots while supporters cited land access needs.
