Area students earn awards at state speech contest

About 1,000 students from 130 schools competed at the first annual State High School Speech Contest at Kearney State College. Marsha Froistad of Petersburg won first in prose interpretation, Linus Behne of Brainard second in interpretive public address, Roseane Glock Rising City took third in poetry interpretation, and Nancy Reeves Central City won poetry reading.

Clarks youngster wins poster contest at district event

Jerry Sundberg, son of Mr and Mrs Philly Sundberg of Clarks, took first in the kindergarten through second grade division of the Central Platte Natural Resources District poster contest. He is a second grader in District 50 Sehoo and will receive a medal at Conservation and Environmental Awareness Day on April 6 at Kearney State College. Christine Hannappel, a first grader and classmate, placed second and will also receive a medal at the ceremony.

Two area men arraigned in district court on cable theft

David Ory and Calvin Tweedy, both from Columbus, and Victor Obershaw Sr. of Clarkson, were arraigned Friday in District Court on a cable theft charge. They pleaded no contest and were released on bond awaiting a pre-sentence evaluation by the probation officer. District Judge Howard Y. Kapouff presided. The case alleges four calves were stolen from the Leopard Breaina farm near Octavia in late February.

Flight safety clinic set for Stromsburg
