A late night disturbance near Fourth and Chestnut ended with a gunshot when Mr. Shipman, returning from the theatre, fired at a marauder after hearing noises from his chicken house. The culprit was a small animal, likely a weasel or cat, which escaped unharmed. The incident interrupted a party of ladies and gentlemen, and a Star reporter missed a potential scoop.
An infant boy named Ambros, nine months and fifteen days old, died at his home in Walesboro on October 11 1897. The bereavement is mourned with a reflection on heaven and reunion with the Savior. Nonna Percifield is named as part of the notice.
Frank Crump of Columbus plans a 24 by 40 foot brick building on Holland Street after buying the Bossmeier corner from Mrs. Stine. The old frame structure will be moved across the street for Mr. Bossmeier to continue a saloon until the new building is completed, with work to start Monday.

Henry Meyer and team slipped into the river from a big Azalia bridge when a mule trapped a hoof in a floor hole. The wagon broke at the tongue and Meyer suffered bruises but escaped serious harm as the team backed off the bridge into thirty feet of water.

The Woman's Musical Club held its first open meeting at the Presbyterian church, praised as one of the society’s best. Affidavits filed against Horace Graves for assault on James Ping after a football game riot. Graves, who bragged as a pugilist, will be asked to pay for his actions and the incident is headed to court as spectators recall the mêlée.
James Henry appeared before Justice Palmer yesterday afternoon for arraignment on a charge of assault and battery. The record notes there was no clear disposition stated.
Charles N Bruce a local school teacher at the Columbus township school house northeast corner suffered a swelling on the left side of his head. The condition forced him to relinquish teaching temporarily and he now rests at his boarding house.
