City engineer Wm Rights and assistant Will Thompson surveyed streets yesterday planned for asphalt paving. Bids for the paving will be advertised in about thirty days. No work will occur this year. paving aims to begin early spring and finish before the encampment.

A correction to yesterday’s item states residents on Chestnut Street between 10th and 11th sought asphalt pavement, not between 11th and 12th as previously reported.
Wm. H. Hallsey and family visiting relatives at Cambridge City report an enjoyable stay and plan to return to Columbus in a few days.
J Cook's hippodrome is under control of the Big Four in this city after a dispute over a $35 transportation balance for employees. Cook alleges the bill should cover rides for the men without extra cost and threatens suit. The railroad now agrees to turn over horses and pay costs, with Cooper & Cooper representing Cook.
The St Denis community showcases a handsome hotel bus finished by R M Jackson. The body is black with dark green trim and the vehicle will be ready for use today or tomorrow.
Joseph Critchfield will give a free lecture Friday evening at 7 30 at the M E church in Petersville inviting local residents to attend.
The Stevens barn destroyed by a Tuesday afternoon fire will be rebuilt at once.
The Orinsco Literary Society will hold its regular meeting in the Northside school building Friday night. The gathering is expected to discuss upcoming programs and society affairs.

The case of Joseph I Irwin against John P Carter administrator of Thomas M Brown estate, for 300 on note, was stricken from the docket. John Hayworth surrendered and was arrested on embezzlement charges. William Waltman appointed as attorney.
The contract for the new boilers for the court house and jail heating apparatus was awarded Wednesday afternoon to the Columbus Manufacturing Co. for $1,150. Other bids were McKvain & Spiegel Boiler & Tank Co Cincinnati $1,164 and Sinker & Davis Indianapolis $1,359. Work to begin at once and be completed within twenty days.
At Brownsville James Thompson brother of Lew attends a convention of church societies as a delegate in Brownsville.
At the Christian Endeavor of the Christian church on Tuesday evening officers were elected. Miss Nettie Sweeney was named president, Mayme Schowe vice president, Nell Brevoort secretary, Chas Foster treasurer, Miss Lynne Thompson organist, and Ivy Lewellen assistant organist.
The gourd fiddle made by a colored man in 1856 at Warsaw Missouri was loaned to Mr. Crump for his war museum by Sam E. Scott of Rising Sun Indiana. It was played at an all night dance on April 12 1862. Scott, a member of the 2nd Indiana battery, lent the instrument after its noted use.
S. E. Ferguson, the photographer, is one of the busiest men in Columbus. His gallery is always crowded. The secret of his success can be laid to the superior class of work turned out and to his prompt settlement of all business obligations. Ferguson undoubtedly does an enormous business.
The condition of Ed Shipman was not favorable yesterday with wounds to the head and a fractured collarbone causing considerable pain. His condition is not believed to be critical and recovery is considered likely unless complications occur.

Mrs. Wilson of Indianapolis returned home after visiting Dr. Hogue. George Tull came from Elizabethtown. Gov. Mount passed through Columbus returning to Indianapolis from Madison where he attended the Horse Thief Detective Association meeting. Mrs. H. C. Jackson of Charlestown visited Dr. Wisne and then went to Seymour. Will Mooney came from Louisville. Mrs. T. B. Prather, Mrs. Thos. Coup, and Mrs. Mattie Henderson visited or traveled to Indianapolis or Shelbyville. Isaac Beatty and wife from Chicago arrived to stay with Dr. Clark. Mrs. Elmer Newsom of Seymour visited her sister Mrs. A E Williams. Mrs. Frank Smith arrived and stayed with Frank Swartzkopf.
A gentleman hired a horse and buggy from Hughes livery stable yesterday afternoon. The horse slipped on cement, the buggy and harness were damaged, but neither the horse nor the driver were injured.
Charles O'Donnell, once troubled by felons on both hands, shows marked improvement and recovery.
Last Tuesday evening Miss Gertrude Washburn hosted a small gathering at her North Franklin Street residence. Guests included Miss Ina Titus, Charlotte Washburn, Nell Gaston, Woodbury Day, John Huger, and Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Good.

The report notes 38 new yellow fever cases and three deaths in New Orleans on Tuesday. Mobile shows two deaths and two new cases. Ed wards records nine new cases and one death. The Mississippi Board of Health has hired an expert and aims to send him to Clinton.
The estate of Amanda J. Brown is being settled by Albert J. Carter as administrator, with the heirs each receiving a neat little sum.

Bert Johnson, the day operator at Edinburg, has been transferred to Shelbyville to serve as assistant agent. He departed for his new post last night.

Joel Critchfield delivered an instructive entertaining lecture at city hall last evening. The audience was attentive and critics praised his ease mastery of English and ability to convey the right point at the right moment. Proceeds supported an unnamed cause.
Johnnie Wills formerly of this city and son of the Wills family has typhoid fever at his grandfather Wills home near Frankfort Kentucky. He is reported to be somewhat improved and getting along nicely.
In high demand this winter Bink Schnur leads Schnur's Orchestra at the Franklin Opera House. He has short engagement offers from several surrounding cities and will depart for Nashville Tennessee in early spring.
A Columbus man purchased a wild horse that amused passersby along east Fourth Street. A small boy and the horse tussled in a playful nip and tuck to decide which would stay on top, and the boy emerged as the winner.
Two or three additional coaches pulled by the No 105 train from Madison yesterday morning. The extra cars were filled by members of the State Horse Thief Detective Association returning from their national convention. Local patrons are asked for patience as new carriers learn routes. Salvation Army meeting on Fourth Street hall drew a good crowd last evening.

Constable Gable arrested Dick Treadway near St Louis Xing on Tuesday for assault and battery on Jim Phillips. Dick confessed guilt and said he would appear Saturday to settle. The Steenberger seine was turned over to State Fish Commissioner Sweeney by Constable Gable, added to Sweeney’s fish gear collection. Relics for Cremp's War Museum are arriving daily and Mr Crump asks for more items to complete the exhibit before the encampment. Dr Miles' Parrpatawe of Headache is advertised at one cent a dose.
This office notes a plentiful supply of material to print sale bills and urges readers to bring dodgers. The Star reports purchase of wood type faces from Hamilton Manufacturing Company in Two Rivers Wisconsin. Brooks Brothers show a fairly good trade in their line of business.
Mr. Brockman of Columbus, proprietor of the Cortland mill, visited last week to inspect machinery and seek a partner to help install a flouring mill if the E and R resumes and the courthouse moves to Seymour. Capitalists reportedly stand ready to aid. If operations resume and the courthouse moves, Cortland will regain a flouring mill for the community.
A carrier pigeon flew through a National Bank Block window in the Hoffman residence. The bird wore a leg ring marked K 312665 and 31266. Hoffman, a pigeon enthusiast, kept the bird pending owner claim.
The public is invited to a Saturday night performance of A Jolly Night presented by Edwin Travers and his company of comedians. The show promises merriment with top acts by Chas Barrington Alice Barrington Norman Hyatt and a prelude reading Forget Me Nots. John Carmichal family left for Sylvia Kansas and Mrs Mike Lewis showed slight improvement.
