A Levelville Tennessee client sent a small pasteboard box of dirt to S W Daugherty & Co for analysis. The material, described as bright greyish, was said to be mined in the Tennessee mountains and is believed to contain silver. Local dealers will view the sample for opinion on ore content.
Mr. Keller, the electric light contractor, is in Edinburg today supervising the work begun yesterday. The foundation for the electric machinery is being laid at the power house. Several men work at the depot area as poles are prepared to be driven into the ground.
The South Street Baptist Church in Indianapolis refuses to accept Rev. C. E. Dobbs's resignation, stating the church is prosperous but cannot sustain the salary needed to keep him. The minister may decide his own course under the circumstances.

A prominent city expressman enjoyed a glorious time in Seymour and returned Friday in fine condition. He visited Columbus friends before coming home. Report circulated last night claimed Ed Shipman had died. The rumor proved untrue as Shipman is doing as well as could be expected.
Ed Shipman is in serious danger after a fall from a J. M. and 1. train at Rockford Friday night. Doctors report a large skull fracture with a hole in the back of his head and a broken collarbone in two places.
The Columbus youths arrive in the city after visiting the Nashville exposition. They describe joy, sunburn, and fatigue from the journey, noting yellow fever fears by Clutch spurred an early return. They joke about Kentucky mosquitoes and the Southern route, praising Hoosier natives.

The meeting of the woman s home and foreign missionary societies of the Presbyterian churches in Marion Johnson and Bartholomew counties will be held in the Presbyterian church of Franklin on Thursday October 9.
Major Butler formerly of the Grand hotel at Martinsville and other hotel projects has leased the Merchants hotel, closed most of the past year, and will reopen after improvements. Steam heating will be installed. Butler is in town to oversee the new venture.
Jr N Marsh owner of the Columbus Times sues the Pullman car company for 1000 dollars after his party’s Nashville trip fare and berth tickets were not honored. Marsh and other editorial members faced insults and distress, suggesting further suits may follow. A city meeting about G A C employment is announced for organization business.
Rolla Norman is succeeded by Joe Clouse as the mail carrier for the Hope district of Hawcreek township. Coal and feed supplies available at U. G. Quick corner of 4th and Mechanic streets.
The city thronged with country people on Saturday trading with merchants. More farmers than in three months were seen, including Ben Chambers Simp Wells and Jesse R Newsom. Columbus remains cautious as grain prices rise in nearby towns with Wheat at 86 and corn at 25 for the day.

Mike Locke arrived home by Cambridge train yesterday morning. John Harvey of Jackson township was in the city Saturday. Thomas Nolan south of the city was here Saturday. After Oil or Gas Huntington October 1 a stock company formed to sink two or three wells for oil or gas. Ten years ago a well was sunk near the city but abandoned and 200 feet of railroad iron dropped in it. Drilling to begin within two weeks.
Maurice Morris received a telegram from Fourth Assistant Postmaster-General Briscoe directing him to take charge of the New Albany postoffice today. His commission has not yet arrived, but he will demand the office from Postmaster Schindler and expects to be in charge tomorrow. Schindler’s four-year term expires October 18.
San Francisco October 1 The Call reports the appraisers for the late James G Fair estate will present a record to the probate court soon. They estimate the estate will be valued far below earlier figures between 30 million and 60 million dollars, with official valuations around 12 million and unlikely to exceed 15 million.
Miss Leonora Jackson, an American competitor, takes the Mendelsohn stipendium prize of 1500 marks. The roundup drew entrants from many countries and all parts of Germany, marking the first time an American has won the award.

Washington October 1 The first cabinet meeting since the president’s return was held with all members but Secretary Gage present. The session ran long as members sought full briefing on affairs. Foreign affairs dominated the discussion with attention also given to the government's case against the Union Pacific railroad.
