Ira G. Gartin and Westelle Case won the first new marriage certificate from Clerk Werner. Other local items note Prosperity, flood repairs, commerce, and a novel electric fishing contrivance by Dora Ogden that terminates fish with a battery hook.

In Hawcreek township at Big Woods last Friday night fifteen pupils from Simmon's school and fifteen from Big Woods competed in arithmetic ciphering tests including addition subtraction division fractions cubes and square roots. Simmon's school won the event.
A school exhibition by the young people of Pleasant Valley vicinity is set for the K of P Hall in Taylorsville on Saturday night March 20 1897. Four plays titled Hans Von Smash To Much of a Good Thing First Class Hotel The Mischievous Nigger will be presented. Doors open 7 30 pm performance 9 pm. Admission 10 cents reserved seats 15 cents.

Samuel Tucker will be buried at two o clock this afternoon at the city cemetery with Rev. John Miller leading the funeral. J D Emmons will supervise the remains. Pallbearers are Ellis Stewart Walter Blakeman John H Brown Henry Simpson Isaah Coleman David Skelton. Tucker was born in Rockingham County North Carolina and moved to Hodgensville LaRue County Kentucky as a youth. He enlisted September 1 1864 in Louisville Kentucky as a private in Company H 107th Regiment New South Carolina and served in Virginia and North Carolina until June 25 1865 when discharged.

The funeral of John Pillsworth, found dead Monday morning, was held from the family residence on Third Street. Rev. Percy Kendall conducted the services. The remains were interred in the city cemetery.
Charlie Crabb, the city phonograph man, wrote Jackson and Walling proposing to make records to sell to other phonograph operators. The convicts replied on March 14 1897 from Alexandria Kentucky that any reasonable offer would be accepted, though Walling had not yet decided on pursuing the matter.
