Three corpses and many prostrations reported as heat wave grips Fort Wayne. Samuel Bard a retired paper maker died after the heat, Amelia Miller found dead sun struck, and Conrad Gerbert died during a family birthday gathering. Heat eased later but many prostrations continued.
At Versailles Kentucky on July 5 Ed Humphreys a colored man opened fire on policemen William Hammond and E Davis during an arrest attempt. Davis was slightly wounded by the assailant.
Indianapolis reports continued extreme heat with temperatures near 100 degrees at Wabash and high_nineties elsewhere. The third year of the pattern shows few prostrations and no fatalities despite widespread scorching conditions.
