W. W. Lambert of Bartholomew county announces candidacy for Joint Senator from the Bartholomew and Decatur district subject to the Republican convention. He seeks the nomination at the party's forthcoming gathering.
Fred C. Ulrich James Burke and Henry W. Rethwisch announce candidacies for county Clerk and treasurer respectively pending Republican nomination. W F Coats and William Steinkamp of Jackson Township also enter the race for county treasurer under party convention.
County records note Albert Fowens as a candidate for recorder subject to Republican nomination. R B Colvin of Hawcreek township is also announced for recorder pending the Republican convention. E M Heener of Wayne township is listed as a candidate for recorder in Bartholomew county.
Stephen Bailey Scott Elzea Henry Howe George Ort John Dinn enter as candidates for sheriff in Bartholomew County pending Republican county convention decisions. Each candidate seeks party nomination at the county nominating gathering.
Louis Friedersdorf of Rockcreek township and Renry C Harris of German township announce their candidacies for county commissioner. Friedersdorf seeks the Third District nomination and Harris seeks the First District nomination, both subject to Republican nominating conventions.

A valuable barn on John Moncuse’s Cortland area farm four miles north of town was leveled Monday forenoon along with last year’s produce and farm implements. Cause not learned. Overcoats sold briskly last evening.
A list of names and a sale advertisement: patent tip coin toe oxfords and tan white kid lined oxfords priced at 1.00, with notes these are new goods and not old stock. Store stresses all sizes and limited time offer under a one price cash policy.
Mrs Elizabeth Jones celebrated her 80th birthday at her Mechanic Street home with many old friends calling to wish her well. She received a jardiniere of eighty white roses as a gift. Weather allows paving work to start soon with potential daily completion of up to 1,000 square yards under a contract spanning 94 blocks totaling about 15,000 square yards. Lienberger is noted as the citys only first class tailor.
Excavation on Fifth street progresses with four Fred Dahan teams at work. New ties for Crump's street rail line are distributed along the recon structed section. Local business owners adjust sidewalks to match the new grade. Sunday School Convention is planned for May 15 at New Bethel M E church with a full program led by local leaders.
Pfeifer Bros hosts baseball returns with daily events. Public notices mention hot meals served every morning and night at the location, with lunch offerings priced at 499 tf.
Washington April 19 President McKinley will send the long deferred ultimatum to Spain and inform Congress he has signed the resolutions. Hostilities will begin before week’s end if Spain fails to comply. Spain is given about sixty hours to evacuate Cuban waters and respond by Friday midnight Madrid time. If not, Cuban port blockades will commence.
John H. and Michael Taylor face an assault and battery with intent to kill charge in Brown circuit court. About fifty witnesses were summoned and a panel of jurors was impaneled. Charlotte Taylor testified she was twenty one, described threats and the shooting in which a revolver was fired at her head injuring her arm. The defense and prosecution presented their cases as the trial continued.
Six new members were invited Tuesday night by the Franklin team. The work stretched until one o'clock Wednesday morning, and the Franklin team returned home at 9:30.
The movement to build electric lines to Nashville persists with ongoing negotiations toward a substantial project. The road is deemed beneficial for all. Tea and Coffee wagon driver Will Gates has gone to fight in Spain, enlisting with Bert Kinsey of Shelbyville who joined him after orders from Indianapolis.
The Seymour Republican notes that Seymour has cut city debt by 14,500 in four years and keeps a healthy treasury while comparing local tax levies elsewhere. It lists North Vernon 95 cents, Bedford 1.00, Washington 1.80, Columbus 77 cents, Tipton 1.75, Princeton 1.90, and claims Seymour’s finances are more economical than nearby towns.
Frank Kent of Shelbyville passed through this morning en route to Soulprille. Wilbur Small of Shelbyville visited Mrs. Joe Woolley. Joe Henry arrived from Shelbyville to see his brother John. Lon Kelble's wife traveled to Michigan City to visit her ailing mother. May Morris returned to Chicago after a visit with the Reeves family. Wesley Hagans Noah Tyron and Wilber M. Small from Shelbyville visited the Sons of Veterans Camp in this city.
