Rural mail carrier Joseph Clouse shows growing paper uptake on his route from two daily paper customers to over sixty. For October he delivered 3 IQ total pieces including letters 567 postal cards 105 papers 2 363 and packages 70 with 172 letters 17 postal cards 4 papers 2 packages collected totaling 105. February was short yet busy and January saw 3 80 pieces handled.
The city Republican committee meets February 10 to fix a delegate basis of one per 10 McKinley votes plus a fifth for precincts over five. Delegates listed for Indiana ahead of a May 17 to 20 encampment, with responses from C W Fampangs and others noting possible attendance and conflicts with duties in Washington.
A Brown County Democratic meeting at the court house drew a large crowd February 26 1898 to choose delegates and discuss the prosecutor race. Four candidates sought the nomination Clerk Hanna Miller Mason and Wellens with a push to limit terms and end party primary elections.
The newly organized Uniform Rank of the Knights of Pythias lists John A. George as Captain and J. W Prall as First Lieutenant with R. D. Sanders as Second Lieutenant and H. E F. Tooley as Recorder. Treasurer L. W. Heagy and numerous members follow, forming the only organized military company in the city and county. They plan drill sessions at K of P hall twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until the encampment, likely for escort duty.
W Takasi the new Japanese consul to Chicago and T Ho an Imperial Navy constructor bound for Philadelphia escaped death at the Occidental hotel after they extinguished gas before sleep. The escaping gas drew hotel staff's notice and both men were unconscious until physicians revived them after hours of effort.
The street improvement project has progressed rapidly with line squares completed and work on the third section started. Excavations for paving are planned to begin around the 15th of this month.
