Salem has reduced its saloon count to one after the last establishment closed Thursday night. Evangelist Sunday’s recent visit is credited with influencing the closures and accelerating the reform.
In Ancona on January 18 a Socialist organized women demonstration to demand bread price cuts. The mayor promised action but men joined, shops were stoned, several were hurt, and multiple arrests followed.

The People’s Party of Bartholomew County convenes at the court house in Columbus at 1 pm on Saturday February 5 1898 to choose delegates for the state convention at Indianapolis February 22 1898 and to strengthen county organization. Each township and ward gets one delegate and one alternate. All populists are urged to attend and voters wary of coin redemption and corruption are invited to join the push for initiative and referendum led by W T Carmichael, chair.
Firefighters were called at 1 30 this morning to Ed Moyers rear residence where a blaze damaged a corn crib holding about fifty bushels. Estimated loss near 50 dollars with no insurance.

The American Tin Plate Company of Elwood will pay employees every two weeks starting soon. Posted January 15 this notice ends ongoing garnishment proceedings and should benefit workers overall.
John Ballinger an elderly resident of Elwood was struck by the southbound Pan Handje passenger train while crossing a bridge and died within thirty minutes. He was deaf and did not hear the approaching train. Ballinger was employed by the Elwood planing mill.
