May corn activity remained robust early but cooled, closing near yesterday. Pork steady, lard weak, short ribs dull with May a touch lower.
A Washington dispatch to the Daily News asserts Chicago has 157 pledged votes with 13 non pledged supporters, totaling 180 to 200 votes if absentees align. St Louis has withdrawn, New York wavering, and western New York may back Chicago as a second choice, affecting the outcome.
A letter from Apia reports Robert Louis Stevenson has purchased property on the Samoan Islands and will stay months to study the country and its people. Political affairs on the island are quiet as locals await the U S Senate action on the Berlin treaty.

The union says factories follow the arbitrators wage increase about 5 percent, while workers are not meeting agreed duties.
In Augusta on Feb 18 United States Commissioner Alexander heard seventeen Sharon prisoners charged with unlawfully conspiring to force or threaten postmaster Duckworth from his duties. Each was bound over in 600 dollars to April term court. all posted bonds and returned home. Tomorrow U S Attorney Ervin will begin testimony before Commissioner Alexander.
Pants February 18. Miners at two coal pits in St Elienne have struck after the dismissal of a fellow worker. The stoppage has stirred agitation among all miners at St Elienne.
Washington reports Blair in the Senate advocating the educational bill while the House debates census data on farm mortgages. He joined because Parnell's Parliament action led Dillon and him to think Ireland's aims could be achieved through parliamentary methods.
In the probate divorce and admiralty division Justice Butt refused Captain O Sheas bid for attachments against the Star and London editions of the New York Herald for publishing comments on the divorce action in which Parnell is named as co respondent. Freeman's Journal faced a £100 fine plus costs for a similar action.
A deputation of miners visited the Earl of Dunraven and Lord Randolph Churchill who both expressed support for state limits on hours. They also called on Gladstone, who said some workmen willing to work over eight hours must be considered, and he could not pledges his course, acting by his judgment.

In Winsisseton North Carolina Dr W G Thomas a leading local physician died this afternoon of diphtheria aged seventy two.

In Charleston on February 18, Mrs Laval died from a gunshot wound inflicted by her husband. Feldman remains alive and likely to recover. The murderer is jailed and contesting the insanity plea as the coroner’s jury has yet to render a verdict. Mrs Laval’s funeral is set for tomorrow.
Lonpox February 18 Pall Mall Gazette criticizes the Government for a weaker course than the Parnell commission report. Ministers are without opinion yet cannot stay silent. W H Smith plans resolutions next Monday to accept the report and thank the commission, but the motion is described as flabby and nerve less.
A. Brehme & Co., importers on German street, H. P. Fowles & Bro., furnishing goods on Baltimore street, and S. A. Welsh & Nations on Lexington street filed deeds of trust for creditors today. Bonds amount to 24000, 40000, and 1000 dollars. Trustees report interlocking endorsements among the firms and with Brown Brothers & Co., perfumers, who failed last week.
