Terrible collision on the Alabama Great Southern rail line
A passenger excursion train carrying about 1,000 travelers from the Northwest and Cincinnati bound for Mardi Gras collided with a northbound train near Coaling Alabama at 2:25 AM. Engineer Edward Doulittle was killed attempting to jump. Many injured on the accommodation train included G. Troms Martha Ohmsom W. H. Phelps Jane Coleman and Oliver Marks. Some passengers on the excursion were killed or seriously injured. Conductor Tom Bernards of the excursion train blamed for the accident. The wrecks left cars demolished and the track cleared by rescue teams. A separate fire incident at a New York Catholic orphanage claimed multiple young lives and prompted swift evacuations by Sisters of Charity.
