We live in an era of overblown memoirs and vanity

A columnized critique argues that modern society floods the book market with autobiographies and biographical reminiscences. It blames editors and celebrities for craving publicity and shows how the obsession with published memories degrades language, taste, and genuine knowledge. It contrasts past literary standards with today’s flood of self published recollections. Includes satirical sketches and a comic domestic vignette about Mr Bowser chasing to church.

General Langley's Banquet Venture and Dagneaux Fiend Rows

A Kentucky farmer General Langley from near Frankfort attended a governor’s banquet for lawmakers. He mortgaged a horse to buy a dress suit, drank champagne, and, after a wild night, woke in a alley shouting for help. The tale shifts to the Dagneaux killer in France, Dumollard, a serial murderer who preyed on servant girls, lured by a countryman guise, and kept a gruesome clothing cache. He was executed after a long trial with many victims and grisly graves uncovered.
