A report from Winchester Virginia notes United States Senator Riddleberger was jailed for five days for contempt of court after a dispute with Judge Newman. A mob later freed him, tearing walls and removing the senator from jail on ladders amid local uproar.
Montgomery August 13 The Vincent trial dominated Alabama news as the jury found Isaac H Vincent guilty on the major counts with a mercy recommendation. The case involved embezzlement of state funds from 1882 24 000 and a 20 000 bill of exchange while serving as state treasurer. A new jury had to be empaneled after earlier deadlock. Also noted were book custody updates from Fred Wolfe and a local baseball game between the Stars and Wide Awakes at Highland Park drawing 600 to 700 spectators.
Knoxville Tenn August 13 An election today favored city subscriptions to rail lines with near universal support. Knoxville will subscribe 3275 000 to the Knoxville Southern railroad from the city to Atlanta and 275 000 to the Powell Valley railroad northward to connect with regional lines. Work starts immediately with completion targets of eighteen months for the Knoxville Southern and twelve months for Powell Valley.
The city would accept 7 percent on a half million railroad bonds and pay the roads subscription in cash. An English syndicate with a million dollar capital plans blast furnaces and iron and steel works at Knoxville using magnetic ore along the Knoxville Southern line and coke from Cumberland Gap.
Hon. Emory Spear in the United States circuit court for the southern district of Georgia ruled that loan companies withholding 15 to 20 percent as commissions in loan agreements are usurious and illegal. He held if lenders in a settled business charged such rates beyond regular interest, the borrower’s recovery is limited to the amount received plus legal interest and included commissions. The loan company’s motion for a new trial was overruled. this is the first such ruling in U.S. courts and could impact similar contracts in the south and west.

A Buffalo syndicate has purchased about 490 square miles of timber land in Dare and Terrell counties North Carolina for over 37500000. They may name the main settlement Buffalo City and have formed the Eastern Carolina Land Lumber and Manufacturing Company to harvest and ship lumber to eastern markets.
Petersberg Va August 13 The Langston murder jury after a long address by the prosecutor failed to agree on verdicts twice and was sent back to their room for further consideration The court then gave additional instructions noting no doubt about guilt but about punishment and anticipated a right verdict if reached
San Francisco August 18 Frank Wilson was hanged at Prescott Arizona yesterday for the May 1886 murder of Samuel and Charlotte Clevenger on Buckskin mountains. Wilson and John A Johnson, both colored, were hired to drive horses to Washington territory. After killing the couple with an axe and taking the stock and money, they burned the bodies. The couple’s daughter survived. Johnson was captured in Nevada. Wilson confessed exonerating Johnson, who was later respited to September 23.
A major blaze in Pittsburg Pa last night destroyed the Masonic temple the Hamilton block Campbell and Dicks carpet warehouse and several tenement houses. The Masonic hall long a Fifth avenue landmark suffered extensive damage as did Schmidt Fridays and the Dispatch and Penny Press buildings with total losses estimated near 1 million dollars before later reductions. Insurance figures varied but the conflagration caused widespread ruin and injuries among the fire crews and bystanders.
In Italy on August 13 King Laimbert via his chaplain seeks pope approval for a jubilee gift. If accepted, the king's brother Prince Tom masse and others will present gifts. The queen of Portugal and Princess Cleotside also send fine tributes. At Saratoga on August 15 a large attendance enjoyed fast racing with Rita R winning the first race and Kamolah the third as the day featured several stakes results.

London dispatch reports Malta recording twelve new cholera cases and two deaths in the last twenty four hours. Authorities continue monitoring the outbreak and urging precautions to residents.
The Times from Chatsworth reports the railroad commissioners arrived at noon to investigate the recent disaster. Witnesses including engineer J. J. Fatal railroad accident reported near CHarrasougs on August 14. A freight train split seven miles below the city and the rear portion crashed into another train. Will Jennings of Valley Head was killed.
