Fragmented tale of Adam Nell and odd lodgings in Edinburgh

A garbled early 19th century piece recounts Adam Nell, an apprentice apothecary in Edinburgh, forced by poverty into the cheapest lodgings. Noise from smiths kept him awake, triggering a lifelong habit of repeating words aloud. He moves across rooms and dates, living eleven years in a pair of rooms, until sleep escapes him and he returns to his old lodging. The narrator, quoting sermons by the Ettrick Shepherd, notes the curious habit and分享 tales of stuttering, moral reflections, and brief legal notices interlaced with other fragments.
