Chicago amid a bank panic as deposits surge and runs threaten numerous institutions including Meadowcroft Bros. and the Bank of Commerce. Meantime markets slide with July wheat dropping and government gold reserves drawn to meet transfers.
Delegates from about thirty-four states gather with strong resolve to curb trusts and combines. Governor Knute Nelson presides and outlines the legal basis and goals, urging law and order to curb monopolies and evils on trade. Henry Lloyd of Chicago elected temporary chair as work toward permanent officers begins.
Twenty six men perished in a mine fire at the Tuente coal mine near Sagle Texas. Local authorities reported the disaster as the fire swept through the Mexican mine site early in June.

An elderly man on the Rochester and Wittshur line stopped near a tiny town to leave a box of clothes pins for his daughter. The box hit a log as the train sped by, scattering pins like shot. Passengers and the man’s family hurried to retrieve them. He rejoined the car cheerful, saying he was glad the pins were delivered.
