Lynching of Sam Bush in Decatur shocks Macon County
Sam Bush a Black man accused of outraging Mrs West in Zion township was lynched at about 2 30 a m by a mob of about 25 men who forced open the jail door in Decatur Illinois. The crowd numbered thousands around the jail and courthouse as Bush prayed before the rope. Two officers were attacked but no resistance was offered by the crowd. Bush was pronounced dead by doctors at 3 40 a m and his body was cut down and distributed among onlookers. This marked Macon County’s first lynching and followed a night of tense threats and dense crowds.
