Washington June 4 the pensions bureau releases 11 months ending May 31 showing 2,369 pensions granted for the war with Spain to invalids and 1,156 to widows and dependents. Original pensions for prior wars total 35,508 with additional restorations increasing rolls to about 466 on Civil War service.
Gen Ballington Booth of the Volunteers of America plans a large volunteer settlement in southern Georgia named The Volunteer City. The 15000 acre tract in the cotton belt will host a cotton manufactory with thousands of poor families from Chicago and other cities receiving free transport cottages and land to start work and repay the funds later.
Lincoln report states Albert Brink city solicitor and Mrs. Walker drank poison in Brink's Lindell hotel room in a suicide bid. The woman died at 1 am. Brink survives with a fighting chance.
At the Montgomery convention two proposals emerge. Edward Forshay, a Kansas City actor and assistant manager, killed Miss Edna Stokes at the Victoria theater in Chicago after a quarrel. He fired two shots, one through the lung, another near the heart, and was arrested after being tackled by hotel staff. Forshay said he meant to kill himself as he could not live without her.
In Elwood City three masked men halted Costen Burns as he drove to pay quarry workers with 2160 dollars. A man with black goggles seized Burns by the throat while accomplices grabbed the cash and fled in a rig. Two suspects were caught and part of the money recovered.
