Meanwhile a Marine Corps clerk Benjamin A. Jones is missing after leaving a note of self harm. $92,500 in his department funds is unaccounted.
New York police court proceedings allege Chu Fong, a Chinese swindler arrested Friday, forged documents in a case involving 36 000 to 40 000 dollars. He pleaded not guilty and was held without bail for examination.
Otto Leuth of Cleveland was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Maggie Thompson, 7, who disappeared on her way home from school last May. Her body was found near Leuth’s home after his confession to enticement, assault, and killing with a hammer while his parents were away.
In Demett Michigan near Mount Vernon William Major about 50 shoots his wife fatally wounds his daughter and granddaughter, then uses an axe on the daughter, and after addressing his son commits suicide in the barn. Mrs Major dies, the daughter and granddaughter die instantly, the son spared.
A mob overpowered Barnwell Court House jailers at 2 a.m. and freed eight black prisoners charged with murder. Ripley Johnson and Mitchell Adam led the group accused of killing a man named Hefferman, along with six others linked to the Martin murder. The prisoners were driven out of town and shot. The jailer accompanied the lynchers as townsfolk witnessed the event. Local authorities fear more violence as crowds gather at the lynching site.
Reports from White Sulphur Springs indicate passenger train No 3 on the Chesapeake & Ohio railway derailed two miles west of the town when a broken axle caused a wreck. Ten people killed five passengers and five employees and about ten injured. Names of the dead and injured are listed with locations including Hannibal Missouri Charleston West Virginia and Rockbridge. The dead were sent to Ronceverte and the injured to the Caldwell Hotel for care.
