Christmas week across the Midwest and beyond brings record warmth and festive scenes. From Minnesota towns to Illinois and Ohio, people enjoy balmy days, parades, and boat rides, with gardens blooming and flowers starting anew as Christmas travelers buzz through cities.
Bamuel, 19, died instantly when a weapon discharged in his residence. Oliver was not arrested as authorities deem the shooting accidental. Nearby, reports from Charleroi warn of a looming coal famine as Belgian miners strike. A separate incident in Syracuse describes a cyclone wrecking a barn and killing Charles Nichols with other injuries to workers.
Detective John Sutton was shot dead by Arthur Craig of Indianapolis who arrived to wed Sutton’s daughter. Craig’s pistol misfired first, then he killed Sutton with two shots to the head. A coroner’s jury acquitted Craig. the lover and daughter defend him.
A severe hurricane struck RoH Pa on December 27 causing many Pittsburgh homes to be leveled and fences down. Telegraph lines to the East were cut and there is anxiety over possible loss of life as the storm subsides.
In Cincinnati on December 27 Edward Gaumbs Jr confidential bookkeeper for the Cincinnati Washington Baltimore and Ohio Mississippi lines was arrested on a warrant sworn by S T McLaughlin general manager of the Continental Line. He is accused of stealing $1000 and acknowledges guilt.
The twenty second annual convention of the Woman Suffrage Association will meet in Washington February 18 to 21. A call notes progress in the movement and urges renewed efforts by both timid and brave supporters.
Samuel Beardsley a prominent Bourbon merchant portraying Santa at a Baptist church charity event sustained severe burns when his cotton costume caught fire. He was enveloped in flames and his condition was described as fatal.
In Rochester New York on December 27 burglars entered the home of William Naramore while the family was away and stole wedding gifts including seal skins diamonds watches silverware and cash totaling about 800 dollars. Also reports three skaters drowned near Waterford during a pond outing as strong winds and waves thwarted rescue efforts.
Telegrams from Rio de Janeiro detail a fierce uprising seeking Dom Pedro restoration. Monarchist forces besieged government buildings, were repelled by troops from San Paulo Petropolis and San Salvador, with heavy fighting and several dozen killed or wounded. By Dec 20 the rebels were dispersed and authorities regained control amid fears of further unrest.
A Toledo special reports the main building of Western College in Maneat Iowa burned at 1 45 yesterday. Only part of the library and the treasury contents were saved. The building was among the finest in the state with a loss of 150000 dollars.
The report describes Mary Miles, daughter of Auditor John W. Miles, sustaining eye damage when a curling iron slipped and burned her eye during Wednesday hair curling. Medical officials say the iris damage is likely permanent.
In Rawlins County Kansas Atwood and Blakeman vie for the seat of government. Blakeman funds a campaign by buying Atwood homes and relocating them to Blakeman. Forty seven dwellings and stores already moved with committees negotiating for remaining homes. Atwood residents reportedly willing to sell at fair prices and railroad backed Blakeman supporters push for success. In Stinesville Indiana two men are ousted from a saloon after a Christmastide drink leading to a fatal shooting by a sheriff’s posse.
Savannah Ga December 27 reports a race riot in Jesup 57 miles south of Savannah with white and black clashes. Killed include Marshal William Barnhill and William Wood. wounded include BR Leggett and W H Woods. Georgia Hussars under Captain Gordon and Brunswick Rifles aid patrols. violence spills to Barnesville and surrounding counties.
The Engineering News notes that U.S. main line mileage added in 1889 will be about 5,000 miles, the smallest since 1885. Most growth occurs in the South with over 2,000 miles, while Washington shows growth in rail lines and other states follow.
St Paul police say arrests over the past year dismantled a gang of burglars and receivers in St Paul. Six suspects including Blancas Crompton Mann and Madame were jailed after raids recovered nearly $5,000 in stolen goods such as plate jewelry and sealskins.
