Hessian Fly Free Dates Noted for Monroe County Farmers
Arlin Obst Monroe County Farm Adviser reminds farmers to observe Hessian Fly Free Dates for feeding wheat this fall with October 9 through 11 cited for Monroe County. A new Hessian Fly race discovered in 1963 has increased and can attack wheats once resistant. Monon wheat lost resistance. Knox 62 is the only soft wheat resistant, while Gage and Ottawa resist hard wheats. Farmers should destroy volunteer wheat and seed on or after the recommended dates to reduce fly populations.
