Monroe County hunters gain from the Agricultural Conservation Program. Chairman Frank E Hoffmann notes 85 percent of wildlife comes from private farmland and ACP cost share supports cover crops, sod waterways, trees and shrubs. Since 1961, over 56,200 acres diverted to conservation.
American Education Week will run from November 7 with the theme Invest In Learning. The highlight is the open house on November 9 at Parkview and Unit Building, starting 7:30 p.m., featuring teaching aids, student work, displays by City Hall kindergarten and 6th grade, and refreshments by Future Teachers of America. The event, organized by the Columbia Classroom Teachers Association with the Board of Education, includes Band entertainment and a planning committee of local educators.
Supt B D Middleton announced the Office of the State Superintendent has approved Columbia Community Unit District No 4 for a gifted children program. Reimbursement will be set by a formula using 1965-66 average daily attendance and district equalized assessed valuation. If costs exceed the maximum, the district bears the excess. if costs are below, other program costs may be reimbursed if claimed.
Ralph Brasher district manager of the Social Security Administration will speak at the Boy Scout Hut in Columbia Illinois on Friday November 5 1965 at 9 00 a m to discuss rights obligations and benefits under the 1965 amendments The event outlines who should attend including those 65 and over widows 60 or older students 18 to 22 with eligible parents and workers age 62 with earnings under 3000 who may be entitled to payments The notice targets residents of Columbia Millstadt Floraville New Hanover and Cupe with attendance encouraged for those meeting the stated criteria.

Gray will be principal speaker at a public meeting at the Waterloo Sportsman's Club Friday evening Oct 29 at 8 30 p m Also on the program State Representative James D Holloway of Sparta and Democratic county commissioner candidate Glenn J Esker Special entertainment is planned and a free fish fry pork sausage lunch with refreshments will follow The public is invited to attend.
Area residents are reminded that daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday October 31. The state will revert to Central Standard Time and clocks should be set back one hour or ahead eleven hours for the correct time.
Mrs. Raymond Rusteberg as chair of the Monroe County Farm Bureau Women announces an Adult Driver Improvement Program. In cooperation with Farm Bureau Insurance and the Illinois State Police Safety Section, the eight hour course runs November 30 and December 1 at the Farm Bureau Hall. Limited to 50 adult drivers, enrollment is at the Farm Bureau office.
Pete Radison testified before the Illinois Liquor Control Commission that he did not knowingly permit minors to drink at Radison's Lounge near Columbia. Inspectors reported two teenage girls drinking on October 8, while Howard Ramsey testified he saw only soft drinks. Separately, Lester Mueller of Columbia had his drivers license suspended for three violations.
Rodney Reichert, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Reichert of Columbia, harvested a 13 point bow and arrow buck in Monroe County during the 1965 season. The deer weighed 194 pounds field dressed with an estimated live weight of 225 to 230 pounds. It was shot around 4:00 p.m. while running on the Billy Kettler farm near Merrimac, during Rodney and brother Terry’s hunt. This is Rodney’s second deer in as many seasons, following a 90 pound button buck last year.
Funeral services for Louis E. Wolf 76 of Freeburg are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Wagner Funeral Home Waterloo with burial in Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Wolf died Tuesday at Belleville Memorial Nursing Home and is survived by a daughter, two sisters, two brothers, and three grandchildren. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday. Also, funeral services for Henry Fauss 89 of Waterloo are planned for 2 p.m. Friday at St Pauls United Church of Christ Waterloo. Fauss died Tuesday at a son’s home near Maeystown. survivors include two daughters, two sons, eight grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. The brief notice records the interment details and location for the deceased.
Funeral services for 86 year old Mrs. Jessie Fleming of near Waterloo were conducted at 2 p.m. at Wagner Funeral Home Waterloo. Burial was in Kolmer Memorial Cemetery Waterloo. She died Tuesday at her home after a lengthy illness. A native of Trenton Missouri she lived in Waterloo 37 years and is survived by her son Dr Paul A Fleming of Waterloo.
Funeral services were held Saturday for George Helfrich 84 of Paderborn who died at 3 30 pm October 19 at home after a lingering illness He was a retired farmer and lifelong Paderborn resident Survivors include his wife four sons Emil Richard and Alvin of Millstadt Wilbert of Waterloo two daughters Ida Neff Overland Mo and Lorena Dintelman Belleville a brother Nicholas Helfrich Hecker 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren Burial was in St Michael s Church cemetery.
James T. Shields aged 56 husband of Alice Shields nee Flynn died October 21 at Koch Hospital in St Louis County Missouri Funeral services were held from Quernheim Funeral Home Waterloo with a Requiem High Mass at 9 a.m. Saturday at SS Peter and Paul Church.
Mrs Ruth Ann Cunningham 25 of Simpson NL died at 1 15 pm Saturday at St Elizabeths Hospital Belleville from injuries in an auto mobile crash a hour earlier. Her husband Ronald Cunningham 26 a passenger was injured. Police said their northbound car skidded on Route 3 and crossed into a southbound car driven by Avery Hogan 64 of St Louis.
Federal law requires youths to register within five days after their 18th birthday. Illinois Selective Service warns that unregistered youths are reported to local boards and may be declared delinquent, leading to possible induction, fines, and imprisonment. Citizens with knowledge of unregistered youths should report details to the Illinois Selective Service in Springfield.
Monroe County residents go to the polls next Tuesday for a county commissioner race between Glenn J. Esker Democrat and Elmer W. Gummersheimer Republican. The winner succeeds Albert Asselmeier Republican who did not seek reelection. Poll sites in Columbia will be open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kruse Chevrolet Columia, American Legion Hut, St. Paul Educational Bldg, and Assembly of God Parish Hall.
The Columbia Chamber of Commerce held its October meeting at City Hall with President Herb Schueler presiding. Minutes and treasurer reports were approved. New business included a $100 donation to the Lions for a Nativity Set, a $500 gift to Regional Industrial Development Corporation, and plans for a Christmas program with metal trees and basket on Main Street. A nominating committee led by Andy Burgess was formed to select three new directors for 1966, to report at the November meeting.
Lawrence Schnell reports two enormous vegetables on display. An 8% pound radish grown by Ed Kannewulf near Rocky Point sits at Kuehner's Tavern. A 7 pound radish grown by Lennie Vogt is at Brother Bergmann's Tavern, with a large turnip brought by Bill Gallagher.
Red Cross Week will be observed in Monroe County during the first week of November with residents contacted for donations. The drive aims to raise 4905.00 to support local and national blood programs and disaster relief efforts.

The Columbia PTA will hold its November meeting Monday at 8:00 p m in the Unit building. Associate Professor Frank S Noble of Washington University will discuss Controlled Play or Free Play For Our Children. Girl Scouts will babysit children three and older. Room mothers will serve refreshments.
A Jan 5 1966 kickoff banquet at Waterloo High School Gym marks Monroe County’s 150th anniversary. The Monroe County Sesquicentennial Association plans a pageant countywide, a commemorative book, a souvenir coin, and a county holiday for school children with officials like Governor Otto Kerner and Senators Douglas and Dirksen invited. Public input and old archives will guide the celebration as the county collaborates with local groups, libraries, and the fair association.
