Prices Decline at Wholesale Livestock Markets
Livestock and red meat prices fell for a third straight week amid liberal receipts and bearish slaughter data. Total federally inspected meat output for the week ended April 23 reached 511.3 million pounds, up 3 percent from the prior week and 7 percent from a year earlier. Cattle and hog prices slumped across most categories, with hogs dropping 25 to 50 cents and sows down up to $1.00, while steer and heifer slaughter was mostly 50 cents to $1.00 lower. Top steer price reached $27.25 per 1600 pounds. hogs traded near $23.00 cwt. in limited sales. Feeder calves were steady to strong, and lamb losses were about 50 cents to $1.00. Feeder cattle in Thursday's auction held solid gains with 370 lb calves at $30.90.
