The Monroe County Sesquicentennial Association announces commemorative medallions for the 150th anniversary of Monroe County founded in 1816. Designs feature the Kaskaskia Trail and Shadrock Bond with Harrisonville’s log cabin courthouse, minted in bronze and two silver grades. Sale begins this weekend at Monroe County banks.

Mrs. John H. Mehan dies at St. Charles Home
Mrs. John H. Mehan nee Beckerle died June 24 at St. Charles Home for the Aged in St. Louis where she had resided 15 months. Born August 21 1877 near Columbia Illinois she was the daughter of Herman and Helen Beckerle. She is survived by her husband John H. Mehan and his children, two sisters and four brothers plus nieces and nephews. Requiem Mass was held at St. Charles Home and interment followed at Resurrection Cemetery.

Members of the Amateur section of the Ill-Mo Radio Club joined the national Field Day contest sponsored by the American Radio Relay League. The Monroe County entry improved from 2,500 points with four transmitters to 5,250 points with two transmitters, while officials and visitors tour the camp including State Police, County Commissioner Ray Rippelmeyer, Waterloo CD Director Bill Smith and James Krebel.

Columbia Hill Bids Opened for 1968 Intersections Project
Bids for the Columbia Hill project are to be opened Friday. The plan includes a bridge forming part of new intersections of Routes 3 and 158 with the present road near the old Shoemaker School. District Engineer Robert Kronst says Route 3 Jefferson Barracks Bridge bottleneck relief is delayed until 1970 due to funds. The 4.9 mile widening and modernization program starts in 1968 and aims for 1970 completion.

Mrs. Conrad Injured in St Louis Auto Crash
Mrs. Michael G. Conrad sustained a fractured pelvis a cracked rib and a slight concussion after her car collided with a truck at 3rd and Walnut Streets in St Louis. Norma Tanner Fined for Traffic Offenses in Circuit Court
Norma Jean Tanner of 512 North Metter Ave Columbia was fined 250 dollars on traffic charges by Magistrate Joseph Cunningham in circuit court. The penalties totaled 25 dollars and 5 dollars costs for speeding 10 dollars and 5 dollars for improper passing and 200 dollars plus 5 dollars costs for no driver license. A three day jail sentence was suspended. Patrolman Joe Callis of Columbia made the arrest on May 28 at 12 45 a m.

First Illinois river canalization contract awarded
The Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $1,577,690 contract to Bernard McMenamy Contractor, Inc of St. Charles, Missouri for Kaskaskia River canalization. The project dredges a new straightened channel 23.8 miles upriver, part of a $73 million effort to widen and straighten the river bed to Fayetteville, unlocking landlocked coal fields in Randolph and St Clair Counties, with completion expected in 1972.
