Illinois researchers report the alfalfa weevil has spread to 17 more counties this year, bringing total infested counties to 46. Entomologist Dr. Richard J. Dysart notes continued northward growth and predicts further spread in two to three years, with spring damage mainly in southern Illinois and early cutting limiting losses.
The House approved a Pub lic Works Bill including a 1.5 million appropriation to canalize the Kaskaskia River as part of a 72.84 million navigation project. Illinois items include 1.371 million for East St. Louis area levee work with a 1.2771 million pumping station and 7 million for the Carlyle reservoir.

Carolyn Viare Pape 10TA N Main St Columbia received the Deaconess Hospital Scholarship for the highest junior grade among nursing and X ray graduates at outdoor commencement on the hospital lawn 6150 Oakland Ave. She was class president and an honor student. The event included awards to Janet Grace Hoetker and others, with remarks by Rev Dr G A Frisz and Dr William G Arney.
Three individuals faced fines in Monroe County Circuit Court Monday. Lester Lee and Shirley Goodman of Waterloo pleaded guilty to theft with fines of 25 dollars plus costs. Goodman’s fine was stayed. Robert B. McClearn of St. Louis pleaded guilty to contributing to the sexual delinquency of a child and unlawful possession of liquor, fined 15 dollars and costs. Leonard Clark of Columbia pleaded guilty to public indecency and requested probation, with case referred to a probation officer for investigation.
Carolynn Schueler of Columbia wins an all expense trip for four to Bimini from Tupperware Home Parties, shared with twenty nationwide winners. Joyce Schueler hosts the party, Barbara Sutton of St. Louis demonstrates, with Carolynn and her fiancé Ray Esker and future husband Robert joining. They depart June 28 from Lambert Field on Eastern Airlines.

Charles H. Kuehner died June 11 in Luverne Minnesota at age 78. Survived by wife Olive sister Mrs Tillye Schoening one niece Mrs Ruth Goldschmidt and two nephews George Schoening and Howard Kuehner. Eugene De McGuire 68 of Millstadt Illinois died Sunday at Centreville Township Hospital after two weeks in care. McGuire was a Monsanto foreman born in Logansport Indiana. Funeral today at Cashner Funeral Home Cup e burial in Valhalla Cemetery Belleville. Surviving McGuire include son James P. McGuire of Millstadt three sisters Lucille Kerner Martha Miller and Laura Hanscomb and three grandchildren.
Clarence J. Otten aged 48 of 921 Columbia Road Dupo died Sunday at John Cochran Veterans Hospital St Louis after two years illness. Funeral held at Cashner Funeral Home Dupo with burial in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Survived by wife Frances a son Timothy in the Air Force a daughter Sharon Kay at home and his mother Ida Otten a brother Walter and sister Miss Marie Otten, all of Dupo.
Robert H. Pearson of Cobdin Illinois died at Anna City Hospital early Sunday. Funeral services were held Tuesday June 22 at 3 p.m. He is survived by his wife Venita four daughters Linda Lavada Patricia and Laura two sons Larry and Harold Jr his parents Mr and Mrs Louis Pearson of Anna one sister Mrs Vernon Hoe pinger of Columbia and one brother Louis Pearson of East St. Louis.
Mrs Sadie Ryan Wheeler sister of John Ryan of Columbia died Monday in St Luke s Hospital She was born August 11 1916 in East St Louis and resided in St Louis She is survived by husband Carl one son Jim Wheeler Taylorville Illinois two daughters Judy and Mary Kay two grandchildren her mother Mrs Sadie Ryan and brothers Richard Plano and John Columbia Funeral services set for Thursday June 24 at 2 p m at Northminister Presbyterian Church Buchard Funeral Home in charge
An auto driven by Mrs. Pauline Dreps of Hecker collided with a motor scooter driven by Gene Henckler at the corner of 200 West Kunz and 100 North in Belleville. Henckler was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital with back pains. injuries not yet determined.
Seventy one civil suits were filed in the Monroe County Circuit Court on Friday June 18 1965 by State's Attorney Floyd E Crowder with help from Sheriff Ralph C Volkert and County Collector to collect delinquent personal property taxes for 1961 1962 and 1963 plus 1 per month interest. This action follows a county board resolution authorizing the suits as the first in a series to recover all past due taxes in Monroe County.
The Columbia Bath and Tennis Club will open its swimming pool at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 27 for membership swimming. Swim lessons start at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 1. Membership cards must be shown at the gate for admission to the pool and bath house.
Captain Walter E. Byerley of the Air Force recruiting staff in St. Louis received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Park College Parkville Mo at a ceremony on Tuesday June 22. He majored in economics and business administration and made the Dean's list in the second semester this year. He enrolled in Park's degree completion program for military personnel.
Secretary of State Paul Powell said the Drivers License Division suspended Daniel R. Huebner's license at 531 S. Main St Waterloo for three violations.
County Superintendent Norman W. Beck announced that twenty one Monroe County high school graduates have been awarded Teacher Education Scholarships. The awards cover four years of teacher training at six state universities including the University of Illinois with tuition and most fees waived. Recipients must rank in the upper half of their class and pledge to pursue teaching. Read among the honorees are Carolyn Young and Mary Jane Wienhoff from Columbia High School. Sandra Corse and Barbara Garleb from Walheimer High. Thomas Guebert and Joyce Hesterberg from Waterloo High. Paula Eschmann and Judy Siegfried from SS Peter and Paul High School of Waterloo.
Tom Shrewsbury son of Dr and Mrs George Shrewsbury 230 West Washington has enlisted in the Air Force and is attending six weeks of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base Texas. Robert A Durrer son of Mr and Mrs John M Durrer 942 North Main Street Columbia has earned a Master of Education degree at the University of Illinois on Saturday June 19 He also holds a Bachelor of Science from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1964 and works as Crafts Director at Monticello LI plans to teach in Mehlville School District.
The Turner Hall building in Columbia, built in 1866 and owned by the Columbia Gymnastic Association, was gutted by fire on Friday evening. Estimated damage reaches 150000 with insurance of 100000. Two firefighters were slightly injured. cause under investigation.
