AEC Tours Illinois Sites For World Largest Atom Smasher
A four man team from the Atomic Energy Commission toured five proposed Illinois sites for the world s largest atom smasher. The November tour followed a 240 page AEC report presented by Gov Otto Kerner on June 15 with data backing Illinois as the accelerator location. The facility would be ten times larger than current accelerators and 24 times the size of Argonne s Zero Gradient Synchrotron. It will sit on more than 3 000 acres with a one mile diameter ring and employ over 3 000 technical staff while indirect jobs could total about 2 000.
