A trustee office statement reveals Maury County expenses over six years ending Sept 1 exceeded revenues by about 16 000 after credit for 4 600 retired courthouse warrants. Beginning balance 14 277.02 in 1902 fell to about 217.55 this year, leaving a net loss of over 14 000. The past year shows 11 000 excess spend vs receipts even with 8 500 borrowed inside receipts.
Reports show the church healthy spiritually as the Presbytery Stone's squad works hard on road projects in Culleoka. A coach moves to quickly appoint line commissioners and secure bounty for the GC M A football season while a judge visits to inspect the workhouse.
The Petersburg presbytery session closed with strong church representation and high spiritual tone. Dr George H Mack presided as moderator and L J Lewis served as temporary clerk. Apportionments for the coming year rose twenty percent, with overall offerings surpassing previous records.
In Columbia on Monday shivering residents faced a sudden cold snap of about thirty degrees. People rummaged for winter clothing, stoves and coal became central, and the coal man seen as the community’s favorite will soon cede status to the coal dealer amid the heatless offices and rising hardship.
A Post Office Department ruling requires box renters to pay rent ten days before the quarter ends. Rent must be paid on or before October 1 to avoid box closure and mail being sent to general delivery. Previously the deadline was the 10th day of the quarter with ten days’ notice.
A Saturday livestock sale at the Ripley Steele farm on Bear Creek pike drew a large crowd and clear profit. All stock including horses, mares, colts, mules, jacks and hogs sold, totaling about $3,000. Mewars Chapman Breele conducted the sale with RK A Moore as auctioneer. Dinner was served on the grounds.
Carpenters are busy at the Opera House preparing the building for the opening of the dramatic season on October 8. New scenery and curtains have been installed, extensive painting and repairs completed, and a new heating system will be added to address past heating deficiencies.
The Herald reports longtime Columbia grocer Miles Cook will retire due to failing health after years of prosperous operation. He has not decided his future path, plans extended rest, and will not return to the grocery trade.
A store at about four miles out on the Williamsport pike owned by a young man named King burned early Tuesday morning. The stock valued around 500 dollars and the building about 500 dollars were destroyed. Insurance on the house was 200 dollars. Fire authorities suspect incendiary origin.
Whittaker & Son of Columbia won fourth prize in the butter contest at the State fair. The show drew many leading dairymen and Jersey raisers. Whittaker scored 93 while the first prize tied at 93 percent. They also purchased Princess Dale, a prize Berkshire in the Tennessee class, for about $200 to add to their herd.
Chas Short, a young white man living near the Melville Akin firm east of town, was seriously injured when a runaway mule dragged him for about a half mile. He was thrown, caught by his foot in the harness, and suffered severe cuts and injuries to his head, hands, and body.
Two hogs weighing about 875 pounds each sold for 45 dollars at the Columbia Stock Yards on Monday. They were brought in by T. F. Bell, who lives four miles south of Columbia, and who delivered twenty six hogs totaling 230 dollars. Bell is not a farmer but a phosphate man who raised hogs as a side line.
Recommendations will be made to reduce the road levy and create a sinking fund for the new courthouse debt. Judge Gordon urges a 10 cent road tax with four cents added to the courthouse levy, boosting county tax to 1.20. Opposition expected, school levy unchanged. A committee may be appointed at October term to frame the January tax levy. One frontier House Commissioner to be elected next Monday.
Methodist pastors and Imy officials prepare for the annual conference at McMinnville in two weeks. The Columbia district reports a strong year with rising membership and higher salaries near a thousand dollars, despite a prior low financial mood. The Presiding Elder, Rev. T. A. Kerley, says most charges will meet obligations and the conference year opens with renewed faith and increased zeal.
At a local post office inspection the rural route carriers in Columbia issued 4053 money orders for totals over 16000 dollars in the year ending June 86. The post office expects the annual money order business to exceed 100000 dollars.
In Chicago on September 95 Gov. Haskell of Oklahoma announced after a Democratic National Committee meeting that he has declined the office of treasurer. The disclosure followed a conference at the party headquarters.
