A large crowd bought goods this Saturday in the northeast business district. The event drew the best turnover seen in memory, with brisk sales and strong shopper turnout across multiple stalls.
A mass crowd on Saturday proves the saloon town is valued for law, order, and business. Merchants report record cash sales with stores busy and customers buying liberally. Shoppers came for amusement and left promptly, avoiding price haggling as they purchased what they wanted before returning to the theatre.
Louise Volland a two year old gold bay filly bred by Ewell Farm, trained by Abe Frank in Memphis, earned praise at the Tennessee State Fair and at local matinees. She repeatedly won dash heats against all ages, with times improving to 2:18 and 2:20, earning a reputation as a standout performer among rival horses and claiming strong racing promise.
F J Waddell, former DuPont Powder agent, testifies that agents shared commissions with customers and could quote prices freely, reversing prior limits. He recalls authorisation from Eugene DuPont and notes rival firms aided price cutting. hearing ends with further testimony on district divisions and a 500 traveling sales force in 1904-05.
In Union City Tennessee on November 1 R H Nanney was approached by two well dressed men who invited him to drink. At a dark location two blocks away they shared a bottle and Nanney lost his $150 gold watch set with diamonds. The men, aged 26 and 70, claimed Chicago as their home and remain at large.
In an extraordinary session Judge Erwin, though personally opposed, sided with leading taxpayers to issue $175000 of four percent bonds to cover court house and bridge debts. The measure passed 11 to 9 after two hours of debate, with appointments naming a bond-sale committee under 1907 act and a 1.5 percent sale commission.
In Scottsboro Alabama a crowd of about 200 in Larkinsville protested Gov. Comer's choice for the Maury County judgeship, burning Gov. Comer in effigy after he appointed J. J. Williams. Meanwhile Maury County real estate activity surged in October with 185 instruments filed, mostly deeds to farms and town property, including several $5,000 to $10,000 deals, and agents expect business to rise in November.
Birmingham buyer W H Jones purchased the race mare Marica from H W Thomas and A O P Nicholson Jr for $1000. Trained by Smith Thomas the mare proved a strong money winner on the southern fair circuit and is expected to improve next season. Jones also bought a Brown Hal mare for $260.
The mule market was active today with many sales and total business reaching into the thousands. Buyers for J. W. Howard & Co. led purchases, securing several car loads on the streets, while five southern buyers were also active and bought many mules. Prices held with no decline despite slower trading. W. B. Burnett arrived Saturday from the lower counties with fifty fine mules.
Farmers welcome rain in a long dry spell aiding pasture and wheat planting while Republicans and Democrats eye shifting House control. Voters face cautious forecasts as rainfall dampens campaign intensity and clouds legislative outcomes.
The A. M. E. conference closed in Paris with Bishop W L Ledford preaching the closing sermon and Bishop W H Heard of Liberia filling the pulpit. West Tennessee district reported nearly fifty thousand dollars in year end church earnings, funding salaries, general work, and beneficiaries, plus a $600 educational fund and a push to value Turner College at Shelbyville at $5,000. The Reelfoot Lake charge drew little appeal and the next conference moves to Clarksville.
The Supreme Court set December 7 for hearing Oscar Reid’s appeal over dismissal from service tied to the Brownsville affair. Reid sued in the United States Circuit Court for Southern New York seeking pay during enlistment after the lower court against him.
A Southern Railway passenger train No. 36 eastbound from Memphis to New York derailed a few miles east of Marion, North Carolina, after leaving Knoxville at 1 am and Asheville at 6 50 am. The engine and cars left the rails but there were only minor injuries. Main line traffic is blocked and passengers are being transferred.
