Hovey Describes Martinique Eruption Like Pompeii
C E Hovey assistant curator at the American Museum writes from Castries St Lucia that St Pierre resembles a sheet of flame more than any volcano report yet. He cites a tornado of suffocating gas asphyxiation and burning ruin with ships sunk by the sea and mud formed by dust and steam clouds. No lava flow yet but gas and cloudburst explosions redefine volcanic knowledge.
