Massive floods sweep Texas with deaths and widespread homelessness. Dallas reports three dead and four thousand displaced as high water threatens Fort Worth and Guthrie rail lines and bridges are washed out across Oklahoma.
Athens officers arrived to fetch Ed Matthews a colored man wanted in Athens on larceny. Matthews had escaped from jail in Columbia and was arrested on a minor charge in Athens. His sentence was near completion when officers moved him back to face penalties. Henry Allen, colored, was sent from Mt Pleasant on three minor charges and imprisoned in the county jail.
Calvert Bros. plan to run two wagons to meet growing ice demand in Columbia where trade has surged since the ice house opened. Salons and prior sales did not deter customers who continued to buy ice for home use.
Prizes awarded at the Primary and Kindergarten commencement. Mary Lee Foster and Sue Willie Mastin earned 135 Red Stars each and Mary Lee Foster won the prize after a draw. John Wesley Finney and Jeasse Ellington tied for the highest first primary scholarship at 947 percent. Mary Lee Foster topped second and third primary term honors with 92 percent. Ellen Douglass Everett won best letter in second primary. Eugenia Sharp achieved third primary for letter work.
Rome May 26 The beatification of Mother Magdalene Barat founder of the Order of the Sacred Heart drew 2500 French pilgrims led by Archbishop Amilette of Paris to St Peter’s. Amiette celebrated Pontificial Mass before thousands including 200 German-Americans under Archbishop Messmer Milwaukee and about 100 from Brooklyn led by Bishop Charles E B McDonnell.
Asheville reports that North Carolina votes to end alcohol sales in the state by a wide margin. The May 26 prohibition election yields a dry majority of about 60,000 votes, signaling statewide implementation.
The Masonic Lodge received a rosewood gavel from New Orleans by express. It features silver inlay of the square and compasses with G, silver banks and tip, and a silver engraved emblem presented by Brother Baxter Hawkins. The inscription reads Columbia Lodge No 1 Columbia Tenn 1908 in mother of pearl, with a velvet case.
The Maury County Country Club obtained a charter for registration. Incorporators include J. Porter Harlan EB New J C Voorhles and W P Woldridge. The club has no capital stock and is formed under the general welfare clause as a branch of the Maury County Pab Re spciation with control of the association grounds.
The Maury Chapter U D C announces committee appointments for the centennialbirth of Jefferson Davis. Monument Stang Flower Children and Conveyance committees are listed with chairmen and members. A theft of gold fillings at Dr Burgard and Dr Merrills offices is reported.
Knoxville dispatch reports Athens Post attacked Governor Patterson for attempting to scale pension funding for Confederate veterans. It cites testimony by Senators Mansfield and Johnson and Representative Neal about proposed cuts from 200000 to 260000 for soldiers and 75000 to 60000 for widows.
Mrs. Mattie Westonbane, 55, traveled 150 miles from Wayne county to Lexington to visit her two sons at the State Reform School. Accompanied by her nephew, she spent three weeks walking across mountains to reach the city and planned to stay until the sons are released or for work while they await release.
While attempting to lift a heavy load at the corner of Thirteenth and High streets, W. T. Johnson strained his back and had to be carried to his home for removal.
Col Jack Chinn, famed across the south and known in the north and west, was awarded 25000 damages in Louisville for the use of his picture and a forged testimonial by Doan’s kidney pills.
Cleveland street railway strike may be decided tomorrow as 1076 to 129 vote rejected arbitration over seniority. 200 strikers deserted. company runs normal schedule while a city petition questions the franchise legality. Police report arrests and a conductor admits dynamite at strike HQ.
In Chattanooga May 26 Judge Lewi Shepherd noted the jury in the J C Duncan murder case held a 30 minute prayer meeting before weighing evidence. After four hours deliberation the jury found Duncan guilty of murder in the first degree with mitigating circumstances. foreman W C Shelton cried aloud as verdict was read amid belief a new trial may be sought.
In Fort Worth on May 26 the State Democratic Convention selected thirty six delegates to the Denver National Democratic Convention. The committee canvassed May 16 primary returns showing a 22,094 vote lead for Bailey supporters for the four delegates at large. The platform endorses Bailey and instructs for Bryan for President.
The Maury County Teachers Association will meet in June to plan the Summer Institute set for June 16 to 26. A full attendance is expected.
Postmaster Jackson announces plans for a new Columbia post office with twenty one drawing sheets. The steel granite marble structure includes basement first floor and semi attic with modern steam heat ventilation and hardwood interiors. Bids close July 2 1908 at 5 PM in Washington for construction plumbing gas heating and electrical work.
A meeting of the Southern Fair Circuit was held in Nashville with Murfreesboro officials N F Molloy and N C Clardy present along with Lincoln County fair chief J T Rhodes Victor C Williams Franklin County Fair secretary John P McGaw Columbia manager of the Tennessee Fair Association and other state fair leaders. McGaw was appointed to advertise in amusement journals for festival attractions and a strong carnival for all meetings and to negotiate rail rates and shipping for horsemen.
A steel railroad bridge on the Fayetteville branch of the North Carolina and Southern Line was struck by lightning during a storm and nearly demolished. The Elk River span near Kelsoe is thirty five feet long and sustained total loss per wrecking crew. A wooden replacement will be built first to carry trains while steel work is reerected. The first train was warned and stopped in time to avoid disaster.
